Africa is a land of incredible beauty. The vast plains and jungles provide an array of sights and sounds that delight the senses. These hanging granite rocks of Savannah are an awe inspiring feature of the African landscape and greet the traveler throughout the region. Testaments to the longevity of these lands and often considered shrines, they are doubly suggestive of the hard challenges of eking out a living here as well as the enduring spirit of the people. With the programs established by WorldWorks , we are trying to ease some of these challenges and provide a better world to live in.

Water & Sanitation

water & sanitation wellA protected water well reduces the danger of water-borne diseases and provides a convenient source of portable water for the community. This lessens the work load of women on whose shoulders the task of drawing water usually rests, and frees them to participate in self-improvement activities such as skills-training and adult literacy.

In rural areas, hygiene around the home can be enhanced by the building of pit latrines. However, the effectiveness of these latrines depends on the neighbors having them too, which is why a community effort is required to encourage safe disposal of human waste. Cooperating partners like WorldWorks can help with essential supplies like cement and technical know how.

Education

These eager students no longer have to conduct their studies in the shade of a tree thanks to the efforts of their community and cooperating partners like WorldWorks. However, they are the lucky few because rapid population growth means that educational facilities across Africa often fail to cope with increasing student numbers.

It is important to keep girls in school for as long as possible. Girls who drop-out usually become sexually active early in their teens and may be exposed to STD's. As a result, a large number of teenage girls are HIV+ in many parts of Southern Africa. WorldWorks focuses on the special educational interests of girl children in particular and provides scholarships to enable girls to pursue higher education.

Food & Agriculture

A few head of cattle can be the difference between hunger and starvation not only because they are a source of milk and protein, but more importantly, they provide drought power to till the land.

Natural Resources

Wood is the main source of energy in the rural areas, which is where most Africans live. Tree-harvesting has left many areas desolate and exposed to the elements. WorldWorks encourages solutions that facilitate "utilization with renewal" approaches to the exploitation of local resources. WorldWorks supports efforts to bring electric energy to the rural areas through the national grids but principally by the harnessing of solar and wind energy.
